The Afghan UN journalist had been forced to flee Afghanistan by the repression of the Taliban. Torpekai Amarkhel, died in the shipwreck of the boat at Cutro. Her husband and two children also died with her, while a third 7-year-old girl is still among the missing, according to some Kabul media reports.
Torpekai Amarkhel had collaborated with the UN for years in Kabul on the ‘Unama News’ project, after a stint on the Afghan national radio. Lastly, she created photographic services on the condition of women, a trade banned like all the others because women in Afghanistan can't work except in a few exceptions, they can't leave the house without a veil or even go to the playground with their children, not even with a burqa.
She lost her life with her family to escape the Taliban regime!
