The 37-year-old Scottish Health Minister, Humza Yousaf, , of Islamic faith, has become leader of the SNP (Scottish National Party), successor to the outgoing Nicola Sturgeon. Humza surpassed the 32-year-old Christian Kate Forbes. The secretary of Scottish Labour, Anas Sarwar, is also a young politician of the Islamic faith.
Humza Yousaf was officially chosen by the members of the SNP to be the new leader of the pro-independence party and tomorrow he will be formally elected by the Edinburgh parliament as the first Scottish premier, the first premier of the Muslim faith in the history of the nation and of the British governments.
Humza, the health secretary, is the Scottish National Party's first ethnic minority leader. He beat his rivals to replace Nicola Sturgeon in a narrow victory that confirmed deep divisions over politics within his party.
Youssaf was born in Glasgow on 7th April 1985 to immigrant parents, a Pakistani father and a native Kenyan mother. He will have to support the banners of Scottish independence nationalism in front of Rishi Sunak, unionist Tory prime minister at the helm of the British central government, himself the son of immigrant parents (in his case Indians and Hindus).
