Among these nights, Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Destiny) stands out, described in the Quran as "better than a thousand months" (97:3). This article analyzes the spiritual value of the last ten nights of Ramadan, with particular attention to the Night of Destiny, exploring its virtues, meanings, and devotional practices.
The Virtues of the Last Ten Nights
The last ten nights of Ramadan, which begin with the twenty-first night and end with Eid, represent a period of intense devotion and spiritual seeking. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ paid particular attention to these nights, intensifying his worship and encouraging his companions to do the same. Among the key practices observed during these nights are:
1. I'tikaf: Spiritual Retreat
The Prophet ﷺ regularly observed I'tikaf during the last ten nights, as reported by ‘Ā’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim. This spiritual retreat, which involves secluding oneself in the mosque to focus exclusively on worship, symbolizes detachment from worldly distractions and a return to a profound connection with Allah. I'tikaf represents a time of introspection and spiritual renewal.
2. The Night Prayer (Qiyam al-Layl)
The night prayer, or Qiyam al-Layl, is particularly emphasized during these nights. The Quran states: "And pray during the night, as an additional offer, so that your Lord may elevate you to a station of praise" (17:79). The Prophet ﷺ would wake his family to participate in this practice, emphasizing its significance as a means to draw closer to Allah and attain His mercy.
3. Supplication and Seeking Forgiveness
The last ten nights are a golden opportunity to offer sincere supplications to Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught his followers a special supplication to recite frequently: «O Allah, You are the Forgiving, You love to forgive, so forgive me» (Tirmidhi). This supplication reflects the spirit of these nights: a sincere quest for divine forgiveness and mercy.
Laylat al-Qadr: The Night of Destiny
Among the last ten nights, Laylat al-Qadr holds a special place. It is the night when the Quran was revealed for the first time:
"Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months" (Quran 97:1-3).
This night is characterized by a series of unique blessings.
1. Divine Decree
The term "al-Qadr" derives from the Arabic root that means "to decree" or "to measure". During this night, Allah decrees the events of the following year, as stated in the Quran: "In it [that night] every wise decree is established" (44:4). This aspect gives Laylat al-Qadr a cosmic significance, as it represents the moment when the destiny of men and events is established.
2. Honor and Spiritual Value
The term al-Qadr can also be interpreted as "honor" or "prestige." This night is so named for its immense spiritual value and its ability to elevate the believer. Scholars emphasize that worship on this night is equivalent to more than eighty-three years of continuous devotion, offering believers a unique opportunity to earn immense spiritual rewards.
3. A Gift for the Ummah of Muhammad ﷺ
According to a narration reported by Ibn Mas'ud, the Prophet ﷺ mentioned a man from the Children of Israel who fought for a thousand months for the cause of Allah. The Muslims, amazed by such dedication, were comforted by the revelation of Surah al-Qadr, which declared that worship on this night exceeds the reward of a thousand months of devotion. This special gift reflects Allah's mercy towards the Ummah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Secrets and Signs of Laylat al-Qadr
Laylat al-Qadr is shrouded in mystery, as its exact date has not been revealed. This divine choice encourages believers to intensify their worship throughout all of the last ten nights. However, scholars have identified some signs that could indicate the presence of this special night:
- A serene and calm atmosphere.
– A sun that rises the following morning without intense rays.
- A sense of peace and tranquility in the heart of the believer.
Preparing for Laylat al-Qadr
To derive the maximum benefit from this night, it is essential to prepare spiritually and mentally. Here are some guidelines:
– Sincerity: Purifying one's intentions, seeking exclusively the pleasure of Allah.
– Repentance: Abandoning sins and sincerely asking for forgiveness.
– Worship Plan: Devote time to the recitation of the Quran, night prayers, charity, and supplications.
– Persistent Supplications: Frequently recite the supplication recommended by the Prophet ﷺ: «O Allah, You are the Forgiver, You love to forgive, so forgive me».
The last ten nights of Ramadan and Laylat al-Qadr represent an invaluable gift, an opportunity to draw closer to Allah and gain His mercy. These nights remind us that the value of life does not lie in its length, but in the depth of faith and devotion. Through prayer, repentance, and sincere worship, believers can transcend their shortcomings and open the doors to Allah's divine grace.
