

The arrest of ISIS cells in Spain thanks to collaboration with Morocco highlights the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism.

The Spanish authorities, in collaboration with the General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance of Morocco (DGST), conducted a joint operation that led to the arrest of five individuals linked to the Islamic State in Spain
According to the Spanish police, the operation was successfully concluded on December 16th, when five people were captured in different Spanish provinces. These individuals were part of an ISIS network active in Spain, involved in fundraising through criminal activities to finance terrorism.
During the operation, authorities seized nearly 200,000 euros, equivalent to 2.2 million dirhams, which were intended to be transferred via cryptocurrency. Additionally, it emerged that the detainees were involved in indoctrination and training of new recruits.
The investigations conducted by the Spanish police revealed that the five individuals had been involved in the planning of at least two attacks, which were fortunately thwarted before being carried out.
The collaboration with Moroccan authorities was crucial for the success of the operation. This highlights the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism. Spain strengthened bilateral ties with Morocco in 2022, establishing a fruitful collaboration not only for the security of the two countries, but also to counter irregular immigration and drug trafficking.
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares emphasized that Morocco and Spain enjoy a 'strategic and multidimensional partnership>/em>'. Additionally, Morocco has established positive relations with the European Union, presiding over the conference to launch the Global Counterterrorism Forum (GCTF), a multilateral platform to prevent and counter violent extremism.
The joint operation between Spain and Morocco represents a significant step forward in the fight against terrorism and highlights the effectiveness of international cooperation in countering threats to global security.
