The Miracle of the Quran: How Fire Emerges from Green Trees
"He who made for you from the green tree, fire, and then from it you ignite." (Quran 36:80)
This verse stands as one of the Quran’s profound examples of scientific and linguistic miracles, offering a precise depiction of Allah’s power to create opposites and orchestrate the universe through its hidden mysteries. How does Allah produce fire from moist green trees? What scientific and spiritual secrets lie within this phenomenon? This article delves into the depths of this verse, combining modern science and Quranic exegesis to unveil the Creator’s greatness.
The verse draws attention to the process of energy transformation in nature—a process modern science uncovered centuries after the Quran’s revelation. Green trees, brimming with moisture and life, undergo intricate chemical changes that store solar energy within their components, later releasing it as fire during combustion.
(Dried wood reverses photosynthesis: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + Energy (heat/light)).
The Quran’s choice of the word "green" (instead of "dry") carries deep rhetorical and scientific: significance:
In addition to its wonderful material aspects, this verse speaks to both the heart and the mind:
Some may ask: How can the Quran claim fire is ignited from "green trees" when reality requires drying wood first?
The verse from Surah Yasin is not merely a chemical description but an invitation to contemplate the Creator’s greatness, who infused even the simplest creations with awe-inspiring secrets. The green
trees we see daily hold within them stored solar energy, transformed into fire by divine decree.
This miracle bridges science and faith, affirming the Quran’s timeless relevance as a guide for humanity’s material and spiritual questions. Just as fire illuminates darkness, the Quran’s verses enlighten minds and hearts, reminding us that all creation glorifies its Maker:
"There is nothing that does not exalt His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting." (Quran 17:44).
Embedded within Surah Ya-Seen (36:77–83) are three logical arguments affirming resurrection:
– Allah Almighty said: "Have you considered the fire which you ignite? Is it you who created its tree, or are We the Creator?" (Quran, Al Waqi'ah: 71-72).
Allah Almighty said: "Does man not consider that We created him from a sperm-drop? Then at once he is a clear adversary. And he presents for Us an example and forgets his own creation. He says, 'Who will give life to bones while they are disintegrated?' Say, 'He will give them life who produced them the first time, for He is Knowing of every creation.' [It is] He who made for you from the green tree fire, and then from it you ignite. Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, and He is the Knowing Creator. His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, 'Be,' and it is. So exalted is He in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to Him you will be returned." (Quran, Ya Sin: 77-83)
These proofs dissolve skepticism, urging reflection on Allah’s mastery over both microscopic processes and cosmic order.
Surah Ya-Seen’s description of fire from green trees transcends its 7th-century revelation. For pre-Islamic Arabs, it illustrated a tangible miracle; for modern scientists, it reveals the carbon cycle and photosynthesis—phenomena decoded millennia later. This convergence of faith and science underscores the Quran’s divine origin, offering “clear proofs for those who reflect” (Quran 45:13).
As chlorophyll quietly fuels Earth’s ecosystems, so too does this verse illuminate a timeless truth: every leaf, flame, and atom proclaims the Creator’s wisdom. In Allah’s words: “There is nothing that does not exalt His praise, but you do not understand their [way of] exalting” (Quran 17:44). The Quran, thus, remains an eternal beacon, guiding humanity through both spiritual contemplation and scientific discovery.
