Two women aged 49 and 24 were killed in the attack on the Ismaili Center in Lisbon perpetrated by a man armed with a knife. The center - one of the few international centers of the Ismaili community - serves as a place of worship for the Shiite Muslim community present in Portugal.
The victims of Portuguese origin were working inside the center when they were attacked. According to police sources, the attacker, Abdul Beshir, is an Afghan refugee, widowed after losing his wife in a refugee camp in Greece, where he was before arriving in Portugal just over a year ago.
The man carried out the attack with a large knife, killed two women and seriously injured a man, before being shot in the leg by police bullets. Abdul Beshir, who is a father of three children and allegedly suffering from mental disorders, was stopped by the police, and is currently hospitalized and under custody.
The Ismaili Center of Lisbon, which is located between two hospitals, was built by the Aga Khan Foundation, and opened its doors in 1998.
The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his condolences and closeness to the families of the victims.
