Morocco was hit by a 6.8 magnitude earthquake last Friday, which killed more than 2,000 people. It was the strongest earthquake ever to occur in Morocco. Moroccans mourn their brothers, victims of the catastrophe. Rescue teams are active to try to help the injured who survived the tragic event.
The earthquake struck 72km southwest of Marrakesh, wiping out villages in rural areas. Al-Haouz province, where the epicenter of the earthquake was located, recorded the highest number of deaths with 1293, followed by 452 in Taroudant province.
Marrakech, in particular, has suffered a strong impact: the city has a rich architectural heritage, much of which suffered damage from Friday's earthquake, the strongest ever recorded in the North African country.
Some parts of the 700-hectare (1,730-acre) medina and its network of alleyways suffered significant damage, with piles of rubble and collapsed buildings. Even the 12th. Century walls surrounding the thousand-year-old city, founded by the Almoravid dynasty, were partly disfigured by the earthquake.
“After a catastrophe like this, the most important thing is to preserve human life,” said Eric Falt, director of the Maghreb region of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “But we must also immediately plan the second phase, which includes the reconstruction of schools and cultural assets damaged by the earthquake.”
King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, chaired a work meeting to assess the situation following the earthquake and provided instructions to carefully follow the emergency measures adopted to promptly respond to the natural disaster. The king also declared a three-day period of national mourning and the Salat al-Gha’ib will be recited in all Mosques in the Kingdom to honor the souls of the victims.
In response to the tragedy, the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI) decided to allocate 300,000 euros from the 8x1000 funds through Caritas Italiana, as immediate help for the basic needs of the disaster victims. The CEI president, Cardinal Mario Zuppi, clarified. "We also assure the support of our Churches, rallying close to all those who have been affected by this calamity and to the Moroccan community in Italy whose hearts have been wounded".
